It’s hip, it’s hop: The Kogi Ssam Wrap

Korea will forever have a special spot in my heart.

It’s one of the three countries my passport got stamped during my first ever overseas trip a decade ago. In that month-long away from home experience, I was able to embraced things that I just see on TV and magazines then. Well, it’s one cool experience to be a foreigner.

I became an instant fan of Kimchi, I had a big crush with Sandara Park before, I like the beat of K-Pop music, and their movies and TV series (Tagalog-dubbed or with English subtitle) bring fresh air in the commercially-polluted local films offered all year round.

A couple of days ago, I was able to taste again, literally and figuratively, Korea during the Kogi Bulgogi’s bloggers event held at their Gateway Mall branch. (They also have branches at Greenhills Promenade, Eastwood Mall and Lucky China Town Mall.

Bloggers were treated to an afternoon of Korean munching and gulping. Among the many yummy delicacies, I spent savouring the plates of Kogi Ssam Wrap.

Just a little backgrounder:  Ssam, literally meaning "wrapped", refers to a dish in Korean cuisine in which, usually, leafy vegetables are used to wrap a piece of meat such as pork or other filling. It is often accompanied by a condiment known as ssamjang or gochujang and can also be topped with raw or cooked garlic, onion, green pepper, or a banchan (small side dish) such as kimchi. Ssam is usually bite-sized to avoid spilling out the fillings.

In the past, it is believed that on full moon days, people wrapped rice in leaves of cabbage or dried seaweeds. Back then, when rice was often not readily available, it was the precious commodity for commoners. Eating clumps of rice wrapped with fresh greens have been regarded as “eating wrapped luck”. Since then, it has been a culinary custom of eating ssam as a kind of ritual appeal for good fortune. Even today, in terms of its nutritional value, having a meal of ssam can be seen as an act of “eating luck”.

Upon eating, the meat and sides are often wrapped in vegetable leaves such as lettuce (which is a good source of vitamin a, vitamin k and potassium) or sesame (that is rich in dietary fiber and has vitamin a, vitamin c and riboflavin), hence the literal meaning of ssam: "wrapped" or "packaged."

Personally, I find Kogi Ssam Wrap as hip and hop. Hip because it’s like “styling” your wrap with filling, condiments, and raw and/ or cooked veggies before you gobbled it. Well, food taste better when they are good-looking, you know. It is also Hop because you can make it as spicy as you can that it can kick your taste buds to jump a bit with that delicious fiery taste. Plus, it’s like a hop closer to Korea with every wrap.

There are 4 types of Kogi Ssam Wrap. Each serving/ order are good for sharing:
1. Bo Ssam (with pork, boiled in spices and thinly sliced) – P365
2. Dak Gui ( Dak means chicken in korean while Gui means grilled dishes in Korean cuisine; and Grilled chicken in a chili sauce) - P385
3. Suygogi Gui (Grilled beef) - P420
4. Black Angus (Korean steak. Available at Promenade only) - P795

Try now! Eat any of Kogi Bulgogi’s Ssam Wrap choices and still have a healthy balanced meal as you explore the flavors of Korea!

The experience even gets better if you get to try Kogi Ssam Wrap beside a Korean-looking head-turner.

Who says I can’t cook

I love to cook as much as I love eating.

It’s just that I have been concentrating more on munching snacks than mashing ingredients in the kitchen lately. The result: another extra few pounds in my tummy and there are still a couple of big feasts coming (Noche Buena and Media Noche) before the year ends.

I used to cook dinner for me and my wife especially during weekdays after I come from work. I also prepare lunch during weekends. I can serve delicious adobo, mechado, kaldereta, siningang or nilaga. But things are different now--- we have a son who only eats food that are fried or something that can be cooked in less than 5 minutes. Thus, our family is in the easy-to-cook era today.

Luckily, there is now a fast, simple and flavorful solution when creating dishes. We recently discovered Clara Olé and its wide range of versatile pasta sauces. Not only that, the brand is also credited for having a diversified yet innovative product concepts and other ready-to-use products to help aid homemakers whip up that delectably perfect and savory dish for the whole family.

Many say breakfast is the most important meal of the day but hey, it’s often neglected because of everyone’s break-neck-speed lifestyle. Want a quick fix in the morning? Whip up that batter for some scrumptious pancakes that everybody loves. We tried Clara Olé Pancake Syrups which has four different flavors: Original, Maple, Cinnamon or Truly Fruity. My son loves the Original flavor and I think this photo is an enough proof how he likes his pancakes more than ever.

My wife created a little twist with our pancakes  as she added mangoes and chocolate spread in it ala crepe. The result? Imagine how you feel when you were still in high school every time you see you crush. That’s how good it tasted like. I want to believe that my fine slicing of mangoes added more zest to this delicious breakfast treat that can also be served during meryenda. See, I can also have my hands dirty doing kitchen work from time to time.

If you don’t have time to cook (too lazy to hold on a pan, perhaps) and just feel like popping a jar or bottle of spread ready to put on top of a slice of bread,  Jams and Jellies from Clara Olé that are perfect for any and all bread recipes, or amp up your salads even further with their Vinaigrettes like Orange, Sesame, Pesto, Parmesan and Mango.

If you are a health buff who is into salads, you can try Clara Olé Dips n’ Dressings—Thousand Island, Caesar, Honey Mustard, Ranch and Asian— that are definitely perfect for those fresh and crunchy greens as part of your daily healthy food fare.

If it’s lunch, dinner or any-time-of-the-day-meals at home or the office, enjoy a classic taste of grilled meat by checking out Clara Olé Original Barbeque Marinade to satisfy that craving. Same goes for Honey Mustard, Hickory and Spicy flavors that will surely play with your senses as soon as it hits your palate. Korean food lovers can also rejoice with Clara Olé Korean Barbeque Marinade, or bring back your glorious childhood memories with the Clara Olé line of flavorful Tapa and Tocino marinades, while Inasal is perfect for that chicken char-grilled goodness. Plus, you can even add some more zing to your rice with Ora Mix Mo Specialty Fried Rice mix that turns ordinary rice to an extraordinary companion for your mouth-watering dish.

And for those who are looking for extra special pasta dish, you can either go with Italian Style, Sweet Style, Three-Cheese, or Filipino Style Clara Ole pasta sauce to liven up any meal. Or, for a more sophisticated taste around the table, Clara Olé Chunky Tomato with Three-Cheese, Chunky Tomato with Basil, Cheesy Pesto, Kung Pao and Mushroom can make every pasta dish even more sensational.

Now, who say’s I can’t cook? With Clara Ole, I can make you eat your words… along with the dishes that I’ll cook.

You got to try this Chicken

I’ve always been a sucker of anything chicken.

From fried chicken to isaw to chicken empanada and afritada, I love them all with a plateful of straight from the kaldero rice.  When I was young, tinolang manok by my Nanay Conchit has been my comfort food when I’m done whether from a heart-breaking experience or disappointing basketball game.  Now, it’s my wife who prepares great dish. My favorite in her personal bestseller list is her version of chicken adobo.

And now, Stackers Burger Cafe, one of the country’s leading fast-casual food concept, introduced a groundbreaking gastronomic treat that sure to become a big hit to chick (the one that comes in a box and gravy) lovers like me: Baked Fried Chicken.

The newest thing to ever happen to chicken, Stackers’ Baked Fried Chicken is Tiu’s latest take on the all-time Pinoy favorite. A definite treat to the more health-conscious food lovers who just love their fried chicken. Dare to compare Stackers’ Baked Fried Chicken with your usual fastfood fried chicken and enjoy the healthier difference.

So you think you are Astig?

ASTIG - (ahhs-teeg) is a Filipino slang word used to describe anything cool, kick-ass or badass awesome. Derived from the Filipino word "tigas" which means hard or tough.

I always thought that I am one astig person not because I can bully around people or stab fear in the heart of anyone with a mere grin.  That's not me.

I am astig because I want to believe that I have given the best I can in everything I do.  I have conquered some of my fears... reached places I never imagined I can go... accomplished tasks what were once seems impossible.

What the heck am I talking about. Dami kong pasakalye! Actually, all I want to say is that I have found a cool product that just suit my taste.  It just happened that its brand name is the same as my blog.  The next time you visit your favorite grocery store, try to grab a tetra pack or bottle of Astig Energy Drink  and you'll find out why I am into this drink these days.

It was in my vacation in Aklan last week when I stumbled upon this energy drink. And it was love at first sip.  It should have been a relaxing 3-day vacation but I need to finish some stuff for my blog and good thing, I have something to keep me going for a few more hours before I hit the bed.

Astig Energy Drink is a functional beverage made with unique blends of high quality ingredients. It invigorates the mind and body for optimal performance. It's one of the quality products from Juan Republik Foods and are now available in Puregold branches Like Astig Energy Drink on facebook and get updates for upcoming events and promotions.

Just to make this clear, I am not paid to do this post. I am just pumped up with this beverage that I can't help but blog about it!

Buckle up for Sunrise Buckets

Every weekend, my family and I
pass by The Grove by Rockwell,
a residential and commercial space along C5 Road amidst the Ortigas cityscape, as we trek our way to my in-laws’ home in Proj. 4, Quezon City.

My wife and I would usually talk about how cool it might be to live in such a well-maintained area.  I told her that we can visit the place one of these days for at least a lunch or dinner since there are a few restaurants already opened there.  After all, it would just be a 30-minute drive from our place.

Well, I have a little confession to make.  I actually went to The Grove and did not bring my wife with me one rainy night.  I just wanted to try one restaurant who’s been making waves or should I say soaring in foodies radars with their tasty buffalo wings (no pun intended).

I am a chicken person. No I am not yellow.  What I mean is that I just love anything chicken --- arrozcaldo, fried, tinola, grilled, barbeque and whatever chicken dish my wife can dig from her favorite cook book, I’ll eat it.

That’s why it’s just a must for me to try a bucket of buffalo wings (yes, they come in tin containers) from Sunrise Buckets.  Among the fifteen flavors in the menu, I chose the entry Juan, not only because it was made to suit Pinoy taste but more for the reason that I need a reminder that I should be home not later than 1 o’clock or else.

Now here's what a bucket meal is all about
Here are the words that I uttered in every bite of the chicken-flavored Juan:

Juan-derful!  Juan-tastic! Number Juan!

How I wish that it was Juan-to-sawa but I have to leave some more space in my stomach for other Sunrise Buckets treats... and for a couple of bottle of beers, of course.

I don't dread this bone collector
The next weekend we visit my in-laws, ur route might be a little different than the usual. Well, we will still pass by The Grove since C5 is the most convenient way for us.  But this time, I would ask my wife and son for a family lunch date at Sunrise Buckets first before we head on to our destination.

So here’s my advice to my friends who are looking for that one great chicken experience (yes, there is such a thing)--- check out www.sunrisebuckets.com or call 477-7636 and buckle up for Sunrise Buckets!

Turning Japanese without really trying

When I was young, my dream is to become a Japanese.

In spite of the many war movies that I have seen where the Japanese soldiers were shown as villains, I still want to be a member of the Voltes V team, hunt down Godzilla and play catch with Mickey Mouse at Tokyo Disneyland.  Even in college, I dig Shonen Knife's music and follow Son Goku's adventure as if I am part of it.

I am now a family in my thirties and still, the Japanese dream sticks in my bucket list but a little logical this time, of course.  Well, I just want to visit the country and experience the wonder of how high-end technologies is able to go along with the rich tradition of the land of the rising sun.  And I do hope to accomplish this anytime soon.

For now, easiest access to feel a little bit of Japan is to consume all the Japanese dishes I can.  Well, the month of March seems friendly that I got quite a treat on it's first day.  I was invited to the launch of the new additions to the already-awesome menu of Japanese dishes of Yoshinoya, one of Japan’s largest chains of beef bowl restaurants and a favorite fast-food brand.

For two hours, it felt like I was a Japanese with eight (yes eight!) different Yoshinoya dishes served to our table one by one that when somebody called me up over the phone, I answered "konichiwa."  Now that's what you call turning Japanese without really trying.

I want to share to you the delectable entries me and all my fellow bloggers and members of media had that night which everyone can also experience only in Yoshinoya.

One Sbarro Night

It was quite a busy Tuesday like no other.

I had a meeting in the office in the morning and another one in Makati in the afternoon.  I got some stuff put on hold for tomorrow so I can accommodate the two appointments.  What added to toxic moments was the traffic jam that I encountered in EDSA and Ayala.

Well, I was just glad I capped the day with a get-together with fellow bloggers at Sbarro in Glorietta 5. Thanks to the great people of this popular pizza restaurant chain for organizing an event, my Tuesday was saved from being  a forgettable one.

Aside from the great food that was served, we were treated to an exciting trip down the memory lane on how Sbarro started.  In 1972, a Kapampangan named Jaime “Jimmy” Salvador joined the Sbarro family in New York.  He worked alongside the original founders and their sons, preserving the family brand Sbarro was known for.  He worked in operations as a store manager and eventually served as Sbarro’s first Area Manager.

Then, after 17 years of living in New York and working with Sbarro, Jimmy returned to the Philippines — carrying the Sbarro brand with him.  Along with Ma. Teresa Rodriguez and her family, he opened the first Sbarro Philippines branch at the Annex in SM North Edsa in 1990 — the first Sbarro in all of Asia.  Years later, Sbarro Philippines expanded to the Visayas, thanks to a partnership with Gerardo Luzuriaga and Marcelino Florete, Jr.

Listening to the stories of Sbarro was a treat since we were served with their signature dishes --- Ziti, white pizza and more! Yum yum!  Everyone can only sing praises for the generous feast.  But the best is yet to come.  Later that night, one of us took home a brand new iPad 2.  And that was after Sbarro raffled P10,000 worth of gift certificates.  Which could have been an added woohoo for me if only I won something.

But as I said, the generosity that we received that night was more than enough to make our day. Talking about generosity, you might want to try this new promo from Sbarro.

A great food experience at Tokyo Cafe

I love Japanese food.  I love coffee.

Call it coincidence or what but I just feel lucky to be invited in a blogger event organized by Tokyo Café, the only Japanese style family restaurants that offers Western dishes with the distinct Japanese touch and prides itself with genuine Japanese hospitality and services in the country. The event was held at Tokyo Cafe SM Megamall branch and bloggers were treated to an afternoon of great food and quality service. Thus, I would love to share my latest food discovery.  Actually, it's more on the food that I'd like to recommend.  The dining experience was such great that I will definitely comeback here with my family and friends.

During the event, we were privileged to meet Mr. Atsushi Yoshizawa, Japanese Executive Director for Restaurant Development of Tokyo Cafe, along with Marketing Manager Kate Paredes.  Mr. Yoshizawa is a native of Tokyo, came from a reputable Japanese coffee shop. With his background with restaurant operations, he adapted the same method and ventured into the food business here in our country. At the same time Ifoods Exchange Incorporated with its growing brands was able to partner with Mr. Yoshizawa that provide him a team that was able to develop and conceptualize the dishes, the restaurant look and the entire brand.

Mr. Atsushi Yoshizawa and Ms. Kate Paredes ofTokyo Cafe
Among the many mouth-watering dishes in the menu, I tried the Ten-Ju, a big serving of fried shrimp tempura with signature tempura sauce on steamed rice.  You just have to taste it for yourself to experience how delicious and satisfying the dish is.

A big serving of Ten-Ju
I also found out that Tokyo Café is not just your regular coffee shop.  Tokyo Café with its 6th branch coming soon on the south has been a sought after Japanese coffee shop in the country. The restaurant’s cozy ambiance is a welcoming sight for me and my companions.  Serving not only coffee but delicious food and unique Japanese beverages is a delectable combination that you wouldn’t want to miss. Combine with other western menu, you don’t need to skip from one shop to another be able to get a taste of all the cuisine and desserts.  And you might be happy to hear they don't have service charge.  Nice, right?  It was such one great food experience that I want to repeat!

Here are only some of the promotions that Tokyo Cafe is offering:

Confessions of a Soyami-holic

I have a confession to make and I want the whole world to know about it.

I have a new GF!

We met in a grocery store one afternoon during my office break.  Honestly, I did not see anything different with her looks at first glance.  Seems like just like the others waiting to be picked up.  Call it destiny perhaps that I took off my hand from my pocket and accidentally hit her by the body but was able to catch her before she fell flat on the floor. It was then that I saw her real beauty face to face.  I noticed something special with her that was written all over her body—low in saturated fat and cholesterol-free. Umm-umm… sexy!

We clicked instantly and were seen together frequently.  I would have her on my lap, beside me or even under my desk while working just to avoid unfriendly remarks from others.  But I'm pretty sure my officemates knows about it. At first, they can’t understand the “madness”.  But soon, they realize what’s about her that kept me coming back for more.

It took awhile before I was able to introduce her to my wife, thinking that she too won’t understand.  You know how wives are when they found out their spouses are hooked into something new.  They’ll dissect you!

But to my surprise, she’s fine with my new GF.  My wife told me, she already know her since she’s been hearing a lot of good stuff about her.  But the downside is, we often had petty arguments from time to time about her.  Actually, it’s like a little “lambingan” when we share a pack of this GF as in Good Food.  Sometimes, a pack of Soyami is not enough for the two of us that we often end up “fighting” for the last chips.

Soyami Soya Chips is your healthier choice to snacking! It is made with Real Soya, no MSG, high in Protein and Calcium and 0% transfat.  It’s available in 3 flavors: Original, Pizza and White Cheddar.

Most people say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.  This could be the reason why I love Soyami.  The good thing about it is that it’s a healthy snack.  There are also other snacks in the market that are packed with protein but of poor nutritional quality, more fat than (and nearly five times the sodium of) potato chips, pork rinds meet the common criteria for junk food.  I admit that I was once hooked with junk food as well but why continue eating such unhealthy stuff if I can do snacking without guilt with Soyami.

How healthy is Soyami? You might be asking this question.  Below are some of the benefits that we get from eating soya.  So if you want to be healthy, just remember SOYAMI:

Smoothens and improves skin complexion.  Soy is such an amazing tonic and helps promotes healthy skin texture, making it smoother, fairer and softer.

Okay for the intestines.   Soy contains a useful substance called FOS which could increase the good bacteria in human intestines.

Your defense against cancer. Soy has a substance called soyasaponin that helps destroy the formation of tumor cells while suppressing their growth.

Aids in protecting your kidney.   Soy protein is more beneficial to the kidney since it does not add more of a workload to the kidneys causing them to be overburdened like animal protein does to the kidneys.

Makes the bone strong. Soy has a common range of essential nutrients, particularly phytoestrogens which can effectively help prevent calcium loss, enhance the body absorption in calcium as well as increase bone density.

Improves memory.  It has been proven that a diet high in soy contributes to better learning capabilities, brain performance and vitality while enhancing brain memory.

Indeed, Soyami is so yummy and healthy for my tummy!  Try it now and start discovering the health benefits you and your family can get from it.  This healthy snack is available in leading groceries and supermarket nationwide.

The good food that is close to my heart

I’m sure one of these days, you’ll bump into a pack of Soyami.  And when you do, lucky healthy you!

This is my snacking without guilt with Soyami.  For more updates about Soyami promos and events and healthy snacks, please like Soyami Facebook fan page and follow Soyami on Twitter.
